Theme: WomenTopic: Women in the Progressive Era
Free Response Question: Analyze the roles women played in Progressive Era reforms from the 1880s through 1920. Focus your essay on the following: Politics, Social Conditions, Labor and Working Conditions
Introductory ParagraphSetting:
The Progressive Era occurred in the United States between the 1880s and the 1920s, and it was a period in history when Progressives exposed corruption in the government and social structure.

Basis for Analysis:
Women made up more than half of the population of America, and their efforts for reformation lead to change.

Partitions:
Women played significant roles in uncovering corruption in politics, reforming social conditions, and improving labor and working conditions

Thesis:
Women played an increasing role in the Progressive Era as they strove to gain suffrage and a voice in both the workplace and at home

Partition 1: Political Reform
-Female muckrakers like Ida Tarbell

-Women Suffrage
-National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA)
-National Woman’s Party (NWP)
-19th Amendment (Enfranchisement of women)

-Something also that could be mentioned is Julia Lathrop, the first woman to head a federal agency. This is also addressed in the next partition, as the NCLC was a social reform group.
Partition 2: Social Reform
-Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU)
-Resulted in programs to instruct children about the dangers of alcohol
-Worked to end poverty

-African American Reform Efforts
-National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs (NACW)
-Clubs worked to address problems like health and sanitation, and also focused on fighting racism and on racial uplift

-Florence Kelley and Lillian Wald with the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC) worked to create the Children’s Bureau in the Federal Department. Julia Lathrop was chosen to head the agency, and was the first woman to head a federal agency.

Partition 3: Reform in Labor and Working Condition
-Women’s Trade Union League (WTUL)
-Initiated many strikes for reform like the “Rising of 20,000,” in which over 20,00 people stopped working, many of them women.
-Focused on unionizing women workers and supporting women’s strikes

-Consumer’s League of New York City
-Created by a small group of women in order to address problems with safety, sanitation, night work, maximum hours, child labor, minimum wages, social security, and fair employment practices
-Resulted in the creation of the National Consumer’s League


General Information:-Women were supposed to marry well and be a good wife before the Progressive Era-Women had participated in little reform, and afterwards continued to push for reform-Progressive Era occured during the 1880s to the 1920s
